Update on 'Stronger Together'

Recently, we and the other peak bodies in the disability sector attended a Round Table forum convened by the NSW Ombudsman to digest and discuss the 10 year plan. The Ombudsman has a role in monitoring DADHC to ensure that it remains accountable for delivering its stated and statutory service obligations. Read more »

$224 million allocated to Respite Care

2006/2007 Budget spending focus on mental health - $224 million allocated to Respite Care.
Prime Minister John Howard’s promise for increased spending on mental health was confirmed in last week’s budge with $1.9 Billion on mental health over the next five years, this includes extra funding for 650 new respite care places. Read more »
Howard Government's mental health funding promise

The Howard Government announced this month a substantial allocation of $1.8 billion over the next five years for spending on mental health with $500 million allocated in the last year and thereafter. The Prime Minister in his address encouraged the States to match the Commonwealth's contribution by increasing funding to State mental health responsibilities such as supported accommodation, emergency and crises services, hospitals and prisons. Senate Committe Report on Mental Health

A report released the Senate Committee outlines the crisis confronting Australia’s mental health services and recoomends that much more funding and dramatic measures are needed than what is already proposed by the Government to tackle this crisis. A “substantial overall increase” in finding has been called for, to support and care for the approximately 60% of Australians with mental illness who go without treatment.
